Question : I WASH my hair daily with a medicated shampoo, followed by a normal shampoo and then a moisturising conditioner. But my scalp will itch after an hour and sometimes has an unpleasant odour.
Answer : ONE of the causes of an itchy scalp is the product you use to shampoo and style your hair. If you are having a reaction to the product, it will generally occur within one hour of use. You should discontinue its use.
Poor quality gels and sprays can also coat the scalp, leading to itchiness. The unpleasant smell may be due-to excessive sweating, yeast infection or not rinsing your scalp thoroughly.
An itchy scalp could be due to a dry scalp. A healthy scalp needs a balanced diet that is low in sugar and saturated fats. Stay away from sugary drinks. Avoid fast foods and processed meals which are extremely high in saturated fats.
You need a diet high in moisture-retaining foods such as watermelons and apples. Green leafy vegetables are also a good source. And don't forget to drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. You should drink eight glasses per day.
Evening primrose oil and flaxseed oil are a natural remedy for dry scalp. These foods actually help nourish and moisturise the scalp. Flaxseed (Linium usitatissimum) contains omega-3, omega-6 as well as omega-9 fatty acids essential for skin health.
