Question : I HAVE floating veins that are dark in colour at the lower and upper knee. What can be done about this condition?
Answer : FLOATING VEINS or varicose veins refer to abnormally dilated or swollen veins, especially in the lower part of the body, such as the legs and feet. Veins that are varicose may be identified as dark purple or blue in colour (due to a lack of oxygen) and may appear twisted and bulging.
Varicose veins may be due to malfunction of the one-way valve within the veins and poor blood circulation. As you age, the veins lose their elasticity. As blood circulation contributes to the formation of varicose veins, they are more common in people who stay in one position for prolonged periods of time and those who lack regular exercise.
You may increase your daily vitamin C intake. Vitamin C, coupled with bioflavonoids, help to maintain the structural integrity of the blood capillaries and connective tissues.
You may opt for a ginkgo supplement to enhance blood flow, dilate blood vessels and inhibit platelet aggregation. Improving blood-flow to the lower limbs has been found effective in the treatment of varicose veins.
Lifestyle modifications may be necessary to further improve the condition. Try walking every few minutes and if possible, alternate standing on each foot with the other supported on a low stool. Don't sit with the legs crossed as it may aggravate circulation problems.
Exercise on a routine basis to help promote good blood circulation and good muscle tone. Relax or elevate your legs above heart level, for few minutes a couple of times a day, to promote blood-flow.
Maintain a normal body weight. This will help lessen unnecessary pressure to the lower part of the body. Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes around your waist, legs or groin, as this can restrict circulation. Choose low-heeled shoes as they work the calf muscles more.
